“Hell on Wheels is an epic doc. It's fast, fun, and inspiring.”
- Chris Gore (founder, Film Threat Magazine)
“…the kind of twists, drama, cat fights and compound fractures that only happen in real life. …the story is extremely compelling, sometimes laugh-out-loud outrageous and above all inspiring.”
- Ain't It Cool News
"Hell on Wheels is full of adrenaline-fueled highs, heartbreaking lows,
and lots of chicks in short skirts kicking the shit out of each other."
- The Onion's A.V. Club
“Part rock 'em, sock 'em sports doc (cue Trail of Dead) and part behind-the-scenes exposé, the film is blessedly free of A&E-style jiggle and melodramatic pandering, and it makes clear the value of Derby for misfit girls who like to clothesline people. Best of all is the film's coda, which tracks the subsequent formation of Roller Derby leagues across the U.S. and the globe.”
- The Austin Chronicle
“Hell on Wheels is a killer documentary about the Austin all-women's roller-derby
leagues that inadvertently launched a worldwide revival of the sport.”
- Salt Lake City Weekly
“Hell on Wheels is a fascinating story and a fun movie.”
- Cinematical

The Birth of a Roller Derby Nation
Before the Lonestar Rollergirls, before the Texas Rollergirls, before the emergance of 300+ rollergirl leagues across the globe... before all of this, there were the pioneers.
In 2001 a rowdy group of Austin women were determined to ressurect an old sport, but with a new spin. This is the beginning of a revolution:
Hell on Wheels is the ass kicking documentary film telling the story of a group of Texas women who band together to resurrect roller derby for the 21st century. Emerging from the Austin music and arts scene, these women create a rock and roll fueled version of all-girl roller derby that has spawned the derby craze that's sweeping the nation.
Currently there are two leagues packing houses and holding bouts right here in Austin, Texas. The media are moving in and the Austin leagues have been featured on Comedy Central’s Insomniac, on the ABC show Switched, The CBS Morning Show, The Today Show, Access Hollywood, MSNBC, HD Net TV, TNT and on A&E with the new reality show "Rollergirls." Articles have appeared in Spin, Jane, Bust, Paper, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Playboy Magazine, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Newsday and several other national and international publications.
The success of the Texas leagues has inspired hundreds of women across the country. Leagues of rollergirls are currently organizing or operating in Los Angeles, New York City, Seattle, Phoenix, North Carolina, Houston, Nevada, Tucson, Kansas City, Dallas, Madison, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Australia, England, New Zeland,Canada and beyond (check the about page for a comprehensive list).
Hell on Wheels is the birth of the rollergirl revolution, chronicling the creation of the first modern-era rollergirl league Bad Girl, Good Woman Productions (BGGW, later renamed as Texas Roller Derby / Lonestar Rollergirls) and the breakaway league the Texas Rollergirls. Filmed from the trenches, this documentary delivers the struggles and eventual success of the rollergirls as they construct a new sport and set forth to conquer the globe. |
